00:38- What is Capitalmind and what do you do there?
- When I founded the company, it was primarily a research-oriented firm around how to help retail investors in India make investments in capital markets, both stocks, and bonds, or fixed-income markets.
- Relatively speaking, most research was focused on institutional investors.
- So a lot of the more complex data-based investment research, when you crunch numbers, you come up with the kind of visualizations that will help you make appropriate investment decisions.
- We build the entire back-end tech on our own, so that our entire PMS, which is the portfolio management service, is actually something that is powered by a technology that is homegrown, including, fund management, automated trading, and a customer-facing platform.
Will the market change be driven by education and demand generation or will it be driven by selling and distribution power?
- I think selling and distribution power have their place because India still happens to be large and very well spread out. So, different techniques work for different people.
- I see a good portion of this growth come from two sectors of the market first, investors who started now and have probably gone through this journey of how easy it is to get information about investing, and are able to make informed decisions without having to go to an advisor.
- You could compare returns, you could compare portfolios, you could compare strategies, could understand how fund managers think directly. Earlier, the distributor carried the message saying the fund manager is thinking like this.
- Now, you go to YouTube, and you can see the video of every single fund manager about what they’re thinking.
- Many of them are interacting on podcasts, Twitter spaces, and the like. So you can actually do a one-on-one connection. So the distribution mechanism has become more social media and direct-oriented and no matter who you are, you’re going to have to do this.
36:39- Being a financial guru, who’s advising people, how do you take yourself lightly?
- That’s the important point because in interviews you don’t know what actually is a good answer.
- Because it forces you to understand that you don’t know enough about something.
- You can only make conjectures. And most of these conjectures are wrong.
- Even if you will make the statements yourself. You can’t be like, “listen, I said that. So Oh, my God, am I wrong?”
- If you can’t change on a dime, if you can’t turn on a dime, you’re not going to be a great investor. And at some point, you’re not going to be a great human being either because you have some principles, you got to live with them.
- You want to be able to experiment. If you take yourself too seriously, you will view failure as a deeply distressing event.
- But failure is part of everything you do, at best you get 50% of your guesses.
