Overview

Antisemitism is hostility to, prejudice towards, or discrimination against Jews. Notable instances of persecution include the Cossack massacres in Ukraine from 1648 to 1657, various anti-Jewish pogroms in the Russian Empire between 1821 and 1906, the 1894–1906 Dreyfus affair in France, the Holocaust in German-occupied Europe during World War II and Soviet anti-Jewish policies.

In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Peninah Zilberman talks about the Holocaust. She also touches upon her experience working as a holocaust survivor. She also talks about the work she is doing at her foundation.

[00:16] – About Peninah Zilberman

  • She is the CEO and Founder of the Tarbut Foundation, Sighet
  • Her goal is to preserve not only the memory of their deaths, but also to celebrate their lives too.
  • She does it through remarkable programs, tours, art, culture, and education.

02:14- Tell us your journey and how it began.

  • I took early retirement and knew that I’m going to come back to Israel because that’s where I was born.
  •  That’s where my parents met. But unfortunately, in Israel, people who are over 55 are kind of not welcome to work. And that’s exactly why I like to be busy.
  • I had been travelling to Romania for the past 20 years on various missions, teaching various teachers seminars, and going to schools, and I speak the language fluently.
  • I have direct contact with people, there’s no need for translation.
  • I opened the foundation with some resources that my parents left me. And we have two missions.
  • One is the tours for the families to visit, where their families live, they went to school and the cemeteries.
  • The other mission is to speak about the Romanian Holocaust.

20:22-What’s the reason for educating young non-Jewish kids?

  • Number one. I do speak a little bit about the family.
  • But then I bring it into bullying. And then to racism.
  • The Romanians are very racist.
  • They have the Roma people, and they speak very down to them.
  • Bullying has been real trouble in Romania because they see the TV now it’s not like it was before. So I bring it down to them. And I do it through the yards. I don’t do it through the history books.
  • On April 19 I had a workshop in Seguin, there were seven high schools in Romanian, one Ukrainian, and one Hungarian.

23:16- One of the programs in your foundation that fascinated me was called Parallel traces. Can you talk about that a little?

  • Number one, our booth is a member of EPJ, which is an association for Jewish heritage across Europe.
  • It started in Luxembourg 23 years ago, by a very small group.
  • There are lots of Jewish heritage sites across Europe, but not all of them are managed by Jews.
  •  And a very important point. Because non-Jews like this organic sensation started of half Jews and have non-Jews, they just found.
