Overview
Innovative changes are the key to advancement in any field. With unprecedented growth in technology, the medical field is harnessing its uses for the overall betterment of mankind. Today, we discuss the progress in innovation in the biomedical field, focusing on radiology and its use in treating Cancer.
[01:08] – About Keith Terasaki
- Keith Terasaki is the chairman of the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation.
- He is also a successful physician and radiologist and draws inspiration from his father, who specialized in research in organ transplantation.
- He gained experience in medical research from his early childhood.
[04:37] – Do you see radiology evolving with technology?
- Radiology has definitely grown with interesting imaging processes coming up.
- I was an interventional radiologist which means a lot of procedures, angiograms, and angioplasties. The field has grown tremendously as we get to use a lot of interesting medical devices
- Lately, I have been mostly reading CAT scans and MRIs. As I deal mostly with cancer patients, we have realized what they go through. That has made me particularly interested in looking for solutions for cancer patients.
[14:02] – What inspired you to hire a new CEO and what opportunities by taking the decision?
- We hired Ali Khademhosseini as a new CEO, as we were impressed with his unique view of trying to innovate and translate his discoveries into products.
- Researchers mostly focus on teaching, but Ali was into research to eventually lead to products and things that will significantly impact society.
[17:26] – Please talk about the new tests that your institution is doing for cancer research.
- If you look at cancer treatments now, there are certain cancers that are very difficult to treat once it becomes metastatic.
- For each patient, the clinician has to decide the course of a chemotherapy agent, and it is always a difficult decision to take.
- Our scientist has developed a test in which he takes a biopsy from these tumor cells and puts it through a little machine that grinds it and makes them into microspheres. These are small tumor cells with the surrounding tissue.
- We get micro organospheres and plate them out to test around 200 different agents against them so that we can try all sorts of chemotherapy agents and combinations. This allows us to decide the effective chemotherapy agents against the particular tumor for the patient.
[38:29] – Tell me about your other research areas.
- When we look at the COVID vaccine, the major problem worldwide is that it is not easily available.
- Distribution is one of the many reasons for it.
- Vaccines need to be transported and then refrigerated, till people come for vaccines. If you do not have refrigeration, it becomes a limiting factor.
- We are working with microneedles for vaccines, and we feel we have a way of crystallizing the vaccine instead of sending it in liquid states,
- Another point to note is you do not need a nurse for microneedle patches. People can do it on their own.
