Make In India has become an attractive phrase, especially since 2014 Narendra Modi’s Government in India. “Make In India” as a concept was also encouraged when India had opened up its economy in 1991. In today’s episode, we discuss the success of Maini group, an Indian group that consists of companies that have domestic and international operations in the fields of automotive, aerospace, material handling warehousing storage solutions, plastics, and composites, and electric and autonomous mobility solutions. The business that had the concept of “Make In India” in its ethos ever since it started in 1973 during Licence Raj.

• Mr. Sandeep Maini is the Chairman of Maini Group.
• He is an industrial and production engineer from the Manipal Institute of Technology.
• Sandeep started his career in Maini Group in 1989. And took over as the chairman in 2007. 
• Sandeep is also chairman of Karnataka of CII for Karnataka state and is presently the Regional Chair for YPO Gold, South Asia.

[02:11] – What have 32 years meant to you as an individual, and what it has been for Maini Group? How do you see and relate it to the growth story of India?

• Maini Group was started by my father in 1973 with two objectives in mind. In 1973, India was not known in the world, it was known as a land of snakes and elephants, not for engineering, not for manufacturing.
• When my father started this company, he had two objectives, one to give as much employment to those who are unable to get employment because of economic conditions. And to take Indian engineering to the world. 
• At the time, India had not opened up, the economy was closed, and there was a Licence Raj.
• In 1982, we became the first company in the country, to export to General Motors and then to Bosch worldwide. So we had a lot of these achievements. And the trend started at that time, when I joined in 1989.
• In 1991, when the economy opened up, success or failure was in my hands. 

[16:56] – What does manufacturing in India for global markets mean to you? How has it changed your life? How has it impacted?

• In 1973, when my father started the business, he already had the mantra of “Make in India”. We were 90% international business.
•  What happened in the last 10 years, just kind of endorsed what we have built the Maini Group on. It gave us tremendous new energy that what can we do? 
• The important thing for us was to see that the Maini Group, is relevant both in India and abroad, with the businesses and the legacy businesses that we had, and what should we do to capitalize on what the new India is all about. 
• We did a very interesting exercise about 10 to 12 years ago, where we decided to look at all our companies again and see what would be the businesses of the next decade. 
• We have always had hardcore manufacturing, and we used to supply, manufacture, design, etc. But we need to build technology that we could use across the world. We restructured our companies with this team in mind.
• We went into from a product company, to a solution company. And under solution, we built technology that was appropriate.
