03:03- About Hindu American Foundation (HAF)
- The Hindu American Foundation is a nonpartisan education and advocacy organization.
- We are different because we operate on a professionalized model.
- When the co-founders came together, we recognized the importance of prioritizing education and advocacy.
- We believed that having a full-time professional staff dedicated to carrying out our mission was crucial.
- As second-generation Hindu Americans, we grew up with influences from both Eastern and Western cultures.
- We realized that Hindu contributions and understandings were often misunderstood by the larger American society.
- Looking at how other communities like the Jewish and Christian communities addressed similar misrepresentations or misunderstandings, we saw the need to create institutions that could develop subject expertise and provide education and advocacy for our community. That’s how we began our journey.
10:50- How does HAF approach issues related to religious freedom and discrimination?
- Recognizing discrimination is key to fighting it. In our largely immigrant community, many people lack awareness of their rights.
- Through training on rights and responsibilities, we empower individuals and educate employers and first responders.
- Our goal is to promote cultural sensitivity, religious freedom, and the separation of church and state.
- By actively participating in relevant cases, we advocate for a pluralistic society in the United States.
