Tune in now to get some educational information about teeth and their connection with our bodies.

[00:35] – About Dr. Sanghmitra Dasgupta

  • Dr. Sanghmitra Dasgupta is the director of CORE, which is for dental, face, and hair care.
  • She specializes in oral and maxillofacial surgery, implants, cosmetic dentistry, and laser dentistry.
  •  She is also a globally renowned surgeon and probably the only bioengineer in India who uses Dentistry to solve major structural and health issues.

[07:31] – What are some common structural and health issues you see in patients, and how does Dentistry help to address these?

  • Earlier, in the 70s or 80s when anybody had a toothache, they would go to the dentist and if the tooth can be filled they filled it, or they pulled it out.
  • Then the root canal process started. With the root canal, it was essential that we do crowns, and then over the years, implantology happened.
  • Implantology was a great game-changer. That is when the surgical protocol started all over the clinics, and then the occlusion.
  • The way the upper jaw teeth and the lower jaw teeth meet one another is what is called occlusion.
  • Enamel has a tiled finish and is the second-hardest stuff after diamond. The crack lines form on teeth by occlusion forces.
  • The teeth come maximum in contact every three minutes when we swallow.
  • If our muscle forces are too much, means there will be a crack or a break in the continuity of the enamel and in that break, if you don’t maintain hygiene then the food collects and the cavity starts.

[23:33] – What are some current innovations in the field of Dentistry that you are particularly excited about?

  • I’m most excited about laser dentistry. In my entire career, I must have done three or four gum surgeries. I’ll treat every case with laser and I work on the crucial part of it and the patient is all sorted.
  • Now we are working on preserving. Preserve is the mantra. Innovations are actually working around that.
  • Enamel is the only thing in the body, once you lose it you’ve lost it forever. People are working with stem cells towards whether we can regrow enamel, but at this moment they are not able to control the size. Sometimes, it is peanut size and sometimes it’s football size. I think that would be the Innovation that I would like to see in my lifetime.
