00:34- About Mags Bell

  • Mags is a motivational keynote speaker, podcaster, and coach for senior leaders.
  • She is the author of the book “What the Bleep is Coaching?”.
  • Mags is a Master Coach drawing on over 25 years of business and leadership experience and 60,000+ hours of coaching.

04:38- How do you define effective leadership in today’s world?

  • A lot of leaders today expect to know everything and think leadership is about directing everything and reaching targets, not realizing there are specialists around them who can help.
  • Without understanding how to lead myself, I can’t lead anyone, because if I’m not leading myself in the right way, people won’t follow.
  • Embracing the shadow side of ourselves allows us to let others step up with their skills and knowledge, instead of hiding behind the things we fear.

06:30- What are some of the common mistakes or challenges leaders face in today’s world?

  • Often, business leaders will say, “It’s different for us in this business,” but I laugh because it isn’t—business is business, and leadership is leadership.
  • The biggest issue is thinking that the challenges they face are so unique that they need to be solved in a completely different way from everyone else.
  • The real mistake is not listening to those who’ve been there, done it, and have valuable insights to share because we think we have to figure it out on our own.
