07:20- What are some current challenges associations face in the USA, and how do you see them evolving in the coming years?
- We’ve been conducting an environmental scan for over a decade now. And one of the things that have really stood out for me, is technological interconnectedness.
- Because of this technological interconnectedness, the disruption, or the disintegration of traditional boundaries, between people, transfer of money, and transfer of information are effective no longer in place during the pandemic.
- Many associations are formed around the geographic boundary, provincial association or state association, or national association. If you are fundamentally organized around a boundary, but the boundary no longer exists, that means competitors can come in from outside and approach your audience.
- The second thing that they’re struggling with right now is because associations in the United States work arenas for professionals or companies to come to an agreement. They tend to have very deliberative decision-making bodies that take a long time.
12:29- What role do associations play in advocating for public policy that affects their industry or profession?
They do three things:
- They educate policymakers about the true workings of an industry or profession.
- They advocate for policy positions that benefit their members.
- They act as a venue to convene companies, to convene professionals to navigate professional or industrial disputes, not in the sense of legal context, but best practices.
