Overview

In an era where digital connectivity is synonymous with economic empowerment, a glaring disparity exists. A large section of the world is without this connectivity which also leads to a plethora of challenges pertaining to education, quality of life and basic human needs. In this episode of The Brand Called You, Nasrat Khalid gives us insight into the life of a refugee and the challenges faced by them. He also sheds light on the genesis of @ASEELApp and how it is helping Afghanistan with digital connectivity.

About Nasrat Khalid

  • Nasrat Khalid is a systems Infrastructure Engineer based in the United States.
  • He has been featured by TIME, NPR, and Al Jazeera, and is a recipient of the Andrew Rice Award.
  • He is also the founder of  @ASEELApp and is passionate about expanding access to the digital economy.

19:44- What were the key factors in establishing your company, and what attributes do you consider essential for both yourself and your team for ongoing success?

  • I always had the desire to make an impact on other people who were like me, refugees or with limited opportunities due to external factors. I also wanted to help Afghans.
  • While working with organisations like the UN, and World Bank, I was dissatisfied with conventional approaches, and I thought of exploring entrepreneurship.
  • I founded @ASEELApp to create jobs in the already collapsed economy of Afghanistan.

32:06- How did you get a team together? And how did you attract investment?

  • I initially kept a very lean team, it was just me. Then I called upon my brother who is an engineer and a couple of other people.
  • Then, I initiated the “Junior Professionals” program within Aseel. This program, launched in 2018 and 2019, involved hiring energetic individuals aged 18 to 22 and training them over two years in various aspects of the business.
  • Getting investors interested was not easy, given the perceived risks associated with operating in such regions.
  • We had to educate investors about the enormous potential within these markets and the advantages of building systems where none currently exist.
