01:02- What were those magic moments that shaped you into who you are today and who you are going forward?
- My cousin’s traumatic accident and subsequent experiences with the healthcare system ignited me to commit to improving healthcare for people.
- A physician involved in connecting data networks across a healthcare system exposed me to technical and organizational challenges and fueled my passion for using technology to transform how organizations and people interact.
- Professors encouraged me to pursue a doctorate, which broadened my horizons beyond technology to understand health policy and the bigger picture, ultimately pivoting me into the healthcare space I am in today.
17:26- Where you’re looking at improving healthcare, decreasing costs, making valuable data accessible, and so on? Do you think healthcare has caught up or it’s still lagging?
- Healthcare is still lagging behind other industries in data sharing and accessibility, with the fax machine still being the predominant mechanism for information exchange.
- Despite making tremendous progress, such as the government funding $37 billion to digitize healthcare systems, healthcare has not fully caught up and legislation had to be passed to force data sharing.
- There are still disincentives built into the U.S. healthcare system that hinder data sharing and accessibility, indicating that healthcare is lagging in fully leveraging data to improve care and reduce costs.
49:29- What are your recommendations to the audience?
- Pick the right solution (“tyre”) for your specific need, as using an ill-fitting solution can cause damage, just like an incorrect tyre can damage a car’s engine.
- Approach implementation from multiple dimensions – technology, regulations, finances, organization, and efficacy – instead of just focusing on the technology aspect alone.
- Ensure all the different dimensions are properly addressed and “tightened down” in the right sequence, much like tightening lug nuts on a tyre in the proper order to avoid issues.
