We are living in the digital age. Almost all our activities are digital. Many of us don’t even remember the last time we used a pen and paper. This episode is about the benefits and the challenges that people face in this digital age and how we can live in this digital world without facing any problems.

Shift from the Corporate World in India to Academics overseas
- Joined ITC in 1983
- I was losing some of my social networks as my friends were moving abroad.
- I was also seeing some potential value in moving abroad. But I did not want to be working at any location where I was getting paid less than some of my peers.
- Those two combinations drove me towards the Ph.D. Once I’ve made that decision, from a doctoral education perspective, the U.S. seemed most advanced.
Challenges that people face in the digital age

- It is addictive. A smartphone has become an extended part of our body.
- I.T. is our consumer. A smartphone is no longer just a phone. It is an I.T. device, reading device, gaming device, and fitness device.
- Once you identify the problem, the solution becomes obvious.
Impact of Technology on Humans
The thing about Artificial Intelligence is that it is very basic. These technologies learn from experience. When you move into a situation that is different from the conditions under which the AIML is trained, they begin to struggle.
What happens to one’s privacy in the digital age?
There is no such thing if you are using the internet. If you go to Amazon and look for a product after that, you will find those ads would be catered to what you would have searched for on Amazon. If we want privacy, we need to keep everything private. Don’t be on social media, don’t post if you are on social media. Don’t post your pictures, don’t say anything against an individual or a company, or a country.
Pandemic and Digital Economy
It’s a terrible situation, we’ve lost so many lives worldwide. We’ve had so much sickness. The global economies got affected, so there are a lot of negative effects. There are also some positives that have come out of it. We’ve all learned new ways to work, new ways to live, and I know of a lot of situations where kids have moved back to be with their parents. People are moving to the locations where they will be the happiest.
Predictions for the digital world
- The decline of megacities, overpopulated, and congested cities.
- While I am predicting cities to become smaller, I expect companies to become bigger. It saddens me because we are going to see an even further decline of small stores.
- I expect we are going to have some major unfortunate incidents in 10-15 years. It will shake us. My best expectation is it is going to be a major cyberterrorism attack.

Rajiv Sabherwal is a Distinguished Professor, Edwin & Karlee Bradberry Chair, and Department Chair of Information Systems in the Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas. He has published on the management, use, and impact of information technologies in Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Management Science, Organization Science, Journal of Management Information Systems, and other journals.
He has performed numerous editorial and conference leadership roles, including Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Conference Co-Chair for International Conference on Information Systems, Program Co-Chair for Americas Conference on Information Systems, Senior Editor for MIS Quarterly and Journal of AIS, and Special Issue Editor for Information Systems Research. He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of the Association of Information Systems, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
