[00:33] About Rahul Subramaniam, MD, Athena Education
I’m an education coach and startup co-founder devoted to building creative organizations that impact and uplift. My primary venture, Athena Education, helps students become the best versions of themselves and receive admission to top universities around the world.
[00:50] What does Athena mean?
- When my co-founder and I were in college, we loved studying history, especially Greek and Roman.
- Athena is the Greek equivalent of Saraswati the Goddess of wisdom and education.
- Education is not just about Gyan that stays in the mind, it has to translate into action.
[02:13] What was the motivation to start Athena, and what has been your journey since you started?
We wanted to do something deeply meaningful, and impactful in India, and in fact, we were kind of just doing this on the side while we were figuring out other ventures. We started coaching a bunch of teenagers, and then one of our mentors sat us down and said you really have passion for this, and you can make money doing this. It’s not just about getting kids into a Harvard or a Stanford or an Oxford, it’s about helping them become the scholars and leaders of tomorrow.
[11:07] Whether going overseas is a choice, or is it because Indian undergrad education has become so competitive?
That is a factor as well, there is a supply-demand gap. The demand for quality education is rising much faster than the supply. And there have been some efforts. There are more IITs. A generation ago, my dad did his masters in the US and then settled in the US. Our scholars want to study abroad, work for a couple of years, and then come back to India, join entrepreneurial ventures, and work on pressing social issues.
[13:51] What is Personal Mentorship Program?
- Understanding our scholars really thoroughly.
[24:34] Do you also support a child to get funding from institutions?
We have introduced all the financial aid policies of different universities and which one provides scholarships to international students.
