Indian Air Force Veteran: Former Vice Chief of Air Staff (VCAS) Indian Air Force.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy was commissioned in the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force. Air officer has his credit for over 4000 hours of accident-free flying mainly on different variants of Jaguar, Mig-21, and Kiran aircraft. He is equally experienced in both ground attack and Air Defence roles, with a specialization in the maritime roles.
[01:15] What did you do right in your journey to the top?
- To say it in one word, ‘Hard Work’.
- I always went one step beyond normal.
- I always thought long-term.
[02:10] What have been some of your key learnings and key challenges?
- There’s no substitute for hard work. If you need something, you need to go and grab it, and you need to work towards it.
- Self-discipline, doing the correct thing when nobody is watching you, that is very important.
- Time Management, time is short, and you have to do multiple things, so you have to manage it very well.
[03:20] What is your leadership style?
When we talk about services, leadership is divided between two that is autocratic and democratic. My style of leadership was situational. As a leader, you’re an open book everyone is looking at you. With a new generation coming in, leadership style is changing. They are very aware.
[08:39] Evolution of technology in the Airforce
You can walk on or run on the ground without technology you can even swim on the water without technology but you can’t fly in the air without technology. Airforce is a very technology-intensive service. We have really moved ahead but still, the practitioners of the airpower have not realized the full potential of aerospace power.
[19:26] What are the challenges China represents for India?
China is a challenge. China is in the race with the USA. By 2049 they want a world-class system and want to be world number one. In this race with the USA, they are pulling ahead of us at a very fast pace in every way. They are building up their capacities, and capabilities.
[22:04] How equipped are we since 1962?
We have come a very long way. 1962 was just after independence. We had already fought wars with Pakistan and China. Our economy was not doing so well. Our cumulative national power was not very high.

In terms of precision, good platforms, reach specialized weapons, air to refueling, and combat support aircraft.
[27:36] A Pakistani soldier fights for his religion, a Chinese soldier fights for his party, and an Indian soldier fights for his motherland
Indian soldiers are battle-hardened. They have seen action in all races. We have that nationalist feeling correct that we consider the country as a mother, that is why it’s called mother India.

- Born on 09 Apr 1959, commissioned on 14 Dec 1979 and retired on 30 Apr 2019.
- Flying:- An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, was commissioned in the fighter stream of Indian Air Force. Air officer has to his credit over 4000 hours of accident free flying mainly on different variants of Jaguar, Mig-21 and Kiran aircraft. He is equally experienced on both ground attack and Air Defence roles, with specialization on maritime role.
- Awards:-For his distinguished service Air Mshl Anil Khosla has been awarded three presidential awards namely, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vayu Sena Medal and has been commended by the CAS. He was also commended by AOC-in-C, during a flying training period as a cadet.
- Qualifications:-He is a post graduate from Defence Services Staff College. He is an A2 category flying instructor and a fighter strike leader. He has had the distinction of standing first in the order of merit in all the attended courses (i.e. Flying Instructor Course, Fighter Strike Leaders Course, Junior Command Course and Staff Course). He was awarded the Commandants’ medal during the Higher Command Course at Army War College. He has attended the Senior Defence Management Course at College of Defence Management and is also an alumnus of National Defence College.
