Overview
Urban farming has been around for decades. Now, it’s becoming more popular as people are realizing the need to reduce food miles and the environmental impact of raising animals, and the use of fertilizers and pesticides. While it sounds great in theory, the reality of farming in urban areas is not as easy. As this episode will show, you will find there are a number of challenges faced by urban farmers. Arpit Maheshwari, Founder of Jeevantika, an IIT grad turned Natural Farmer, talks to us about regenerative farming in depth.

00:43- What made you come back to India?
- After I graduated from IIT Bombay, I didn’t even go into technology. It was more in the space of finance.
- I joined Goldman Sachs as a strategist, and I was working on a fascinating problem of how to use mathematical models to make operations a bit more efficient.
- I did that for a few years and led the Bangalore team, but then I moved on to the world of technology because something about startups was really more enticing than working in a very big bank.
03:15- Learnings during Sabbatical
- Sabbatical is what my wife and I needed to actually transition.
- We took a one-year sabbatical and went to South America and traveled in a few countries.
- We volunteered with the Government of Chile in an English teaching program.
- I personally became much more aware of the gravity of how we have completely changed our environment.

- We also wanted a name that is locally relevant.

- We really wanted something which reflects our philosophy.
- Our farming efforts or the land efforts are very centered around the concept of land regeneration.
- Unlike many other farms, we don’t actually produce for commercial selling, but rather use it for primarily our own sustainability.
08:36- What are the sustainability challenges you have faced?
- The biggest challenge has been the lack of a support system.
- Coming from the IITs and working in some of the best companies across the globe, it was easy to have a support system.
