00:37-What is Bombchelled?

  • I work with corporate psychology, businesses, and customers to bring them out of their shells and into positive action.
  • It’s about thinking your authenticity, your work, and also what you are as a person.

01:47- What is a positive disruptor and empowerment coach?

  • We’re all different, we all bring something new to the party. It is the way we bring ourselves to the world and do it in a way that makes us feel good.
  • This is disruption. It is disrupting your mind. It’s disrupting how you operate but in a positive way.
  • For example, it’s about making sure that a person who’s teaching and being available is in the right mindset. It might be learning about how to manage your energy. It might be about how we focus our mindset.
  • Empowerment coaching is about you, and how you want to empower yourself in terms of your willpower. And answering questions like how do we get out in the morning?

05:32- What made you select coaching as a profession?

  • I’m adopted, and I wanted to find out more about myself. I wanted to understand, where I go from now instead of “fixing” myself.
  • I believed that people aren’t broken, and they don’t need fixing.
  • In 2006, coaching was coming over from America. It was goal focused. It was future-focused and it appealed to me.

07:25- How has your background supported your coaching philosophy, your style, and your values?

  • I grew up as the only colored face, in the Shetland Isles. It never felt like I fitted in because I didn’t understand my color.
  • That really built up my resilience and understanding of what it feels like to be alone, but also what it feels like to have that tenacity to achieve what you believe in yourself.
  • I’m a very empathetic person. As an empathetic person, you take on everybody else’s emotions and energy, which is very draining for you.
  • And to have all of that background and understanding, I think it makes you really humble.

10:47- How have you and your perspectives been shaped by the people?

  • My dad’s Jewish, but he doesn’t follow the faith. He married outside of the faith. And my mom is agnostic. And that alone is a bit of a challenge.
  • And I’m from the Caribbean as well. I identify with Scotland. I understand about identity, I understand how that sits with you.
  • Having that whole kind of mixture in the pot has really helped develop my style as a coach.
  • My gift is making psychological concepts, simplistic and fun, vibrant and memorable. And as much as its fun and creative, it’s about giving people a toolkit that actually works

13:22- How does culture impact coaching?

  • In the UK is we use different languages and different accents. So, it’s important to understand and listen and be really empathetic to the language and culture.
  • People of an ethnic minority have different challenges that are often unspoken. So, you have to be quite astute to understand what is the cultural difference.
  • When you’re coaching, it’s about building that trust, understanding, empathy, and confidentiality, and making sure that people are in a safe space.

19:01- Tell us a little bit about the book and your motivation to write it.

  • I used to love bookstores, they are amazing, and you can get lost in them. But we pressure ourselves actually to choose books that we think we ought to read.
  • Most self-help books have fabulous stories about the person going through a huge transformation, but they never offer a toolkit to apply our own stories.
  • My book has my story and 21 life lessons, but you can take my story and use your story and interject your own experiences into it.
  • It is coupled with activities that you need to do; it has hard questions like what do you actually want?

22:34- What would your advice be to individuals starting off in their life?

  • I have this phrase: life is for enjoying and not enduring.
  • If you are setting out, and you’re doing things, listen wisely and make sure that you ask as many questions as you possibly can.
  • The most important thing is being real, showing up, and being seen for who you are.
