Overview

Professional leadership coaching targeted at the person or coaching for your entire organization is one of the most powerful tools available to take leadership development to a deeper and more sustainable level. Like no one else, coaches broaden perspectives, motivate, and offer both challenge and support.

In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Dr Simon Western talks about different kinds of leadership and his style and philosophy of coaching. He also talks about his role as the CEO of Analytic Network Coaching.

[00:36] – About Simon Western

  • Dr Western is the CEO of Analytic Network Coaching.
  • He is the founder of the Eco Leadership Institute
  • Simon has a pedigree of teaching leadership internationally, and keynote speaking at international events.

04:49- What are the four different kinds of leadership?

  • First is controller leadership. And that was really about factory work, where you really control the resources.
  • And human beings are there as cogs in the wheel of the machine, so it’s all about control.
  • Then we have therapist leadership where the idea is happy workers are more productive workers.
  • And then we have Messiah leadership, and that was about transformational leaders.
  • This idea was that you’d get this charismatic leader with a vision and everyone would follow them wonderfully.
  • Then we have eco leadership. And this phase comes about kind of in parallel to the internet to the new technologies of globalization.
  • NP and leaders are realizing that you have to think about organizations as ecosystems within ecosystems.

07:36- Are leaders born or are they made?

  • Leaders, we all have different personalities.
  • And we’re all created with our social environment.
  • So we’re made, we’re socially constructed.
  • We have different personalities, which kind of takes us in different directions.

10:59- How does culture impact coaching?

  • A lot and I think, often in the West, we don’t account for this enough.
  • But coaching, kind of the dominant force of coaching, comes from the USA.
  • They’re the dominant, the biggest publishers out there that have more coaches there than anywhere else, so people don’t think enough about how culture does impact.
  • When you’re working in different cultures, there’s a different understanding of self.
  • And I think coaching really has to kind of learn how to adapt much more.
