Overview

We often discuss the importance of health. But do we consider mental health when we talk about it? What does well-being mean? It is an often ignored subject owing to the stigma that it carries. However, the good news is that it is slowly changing with people opening up about their issues and showing their willingness to work to sort these issues out. Today, we discuss the mental health challenges in Asia and what does transformation entail.

[00:34] – About Allison Heiliczer

  • Allison is the founder of Rethink The Couch.
  • She is a psychotherapist, a counsellor, and a coach.
  • Her experience of working with a Japanese family in her early days inspired her to work with the Asian community. She aspired to move to Asia, and after spending more than 10 years in Hong Kong, has relocated to Singapore.

[05:13] – How do you help people transform their relationships and work challenges?

  • I work with two groups of people. With one set of people, I want to improve their relationship challenges. With the other set, I want to focus on their work challenges.
  • Transformation is a process where something goes from one state to another state, which is not necessarily a positive change, although the clients seek positive transformation.
  • I want my clients to move from the state they meet me in, to the state where they align with what they want in life, with their values, goals, and higher purpose.

[14:22] – As a coach, how does your background support your coaching philosophies?

  • I am basically equidistant between a therapist and a coach. Sometimes, I am more of a therapist and sometimes, I am more of a coach, depending on the client in front of me.
  • It is a very important skill set to shift gears and dig a little into the past
  • I value curiosity a lot. When I am coaching, I do not use pre-cooked coaching tools. I also believe in employing creativity and collaboration.
