Coaching or mentoring used to be done by some elder family member or someone senior in your company but that is not the case anymore. Today, coaching has become a profession and people are even willing to pay for it. A few cultures don’t consider coaching necessary while others see it as an absolute necessity. Today we talk to Eddie about coaching in detail.

01:51 – What is the kind of work that you do with leaders?

• I work with leaders to drive impact and accelerate their growth in whatever areas they are struggling with at the moment.
• I work as their executive coach one on one taking them into the sacred place as I call it. It is where things unfold where they can’t be anywhere else.
• Senior leaders need someone they can confide in because they are expected to have all the answers. So I provide them with a safe space where they can have the tough conversations that they can’t have with just anybody.

09:48 – What are some of the areas that younger leaders need to be coached in?

• I did a presentation a couple of years ago for ICF, and we talked about multi-generational coaching in which I looked at different generations.
• People of different generations have different expectations. Older generations have expectations of people working harder while the newer generations expect better performance and more fun.
• It is very different for different generations, but we need to focus more on what is needed in the current environment to get the best possible results.

13:52 – How does culture impact coaching?

• Certain cultures are not willing to accept coaching while others are very much open to getting coaching.
• Some cultures think that a coach will help them get to the next level while in other cultures it might be considered a lack of competency to get a coach.
• My role as a coach is not to be an expert in their field but to be their thinking partner. 
• Culture does impact coaching to a very good extent, but we need to focus on breaking those stereotypes because coaching in any field has proved to get better results by providing a safe space for leaders to talk about their issues.
