[00:36] – About Joanne Irving

  • Joanne is an executive advisor and a leadership expert.
  • She is an author of a book titled “The Factor for Leadership.”
  • Joanne is a trained clinical psychologist and started her career as a therapist.

[03:40] – Tell me about your book and your hypothesis when you wrote it.

  • The book is based on my work with hundreds of leaders from a variety of organizations.
  • I noticed that the most effective leaders were exceedingly curious and courageous. But many of them didn’t recognize that until I pointed it out.
  • I worked with the CEO of a global manufacturing company, and she was the first one in her family. She grew up in a rural area with no bathrooms and running water. She was the first one to go to college in her family. So she leaves this extremely rural area, comes to LA, and starts trying to adjust to life in the city.
  • She got a call from her sister, telling her that her cousin had died, leaving a three-year-old daughter with no one to take care of. My client, at the age of 22 voluntarily decided to become a single parent to this child.
  • I met a lot of people with strengths that they’re really not aware of consciously.
  • As a psychologist, I know that if you’re aware of something in yourself, you can grow it, and you can develop it. I thought it was really important to identify those strengths.
  • And I called it the factor.

[09:03] – Why does leadership require curiosity and courage?

  • We are in a situation where we have a fast pace of change. So, leaders need to be asking questions that may challenge conventional wisdom.
  • They need to examine the assumptions that they’re making about work, but they also need the courage to take action in the face of ambiguity.
  • IQ and EQ are necessary, but they’re not sufficient today in this rapid change.
