[04:17] -What are some of the significant challenges that plastic poses for our environment?
- Someone from the plastic industry has coined a very nice statement, “Plastics do not litter, people do.”
- Just like how we had the Stone Age, the Iron Age, and the other ages, we are today in what is called a plastic age.
- Plastics are here to stay until such time that a replacement can be found. I am not promoting or guarding plastic.
- We have this famous “reuse, reduce, recycle” quote, but we say “reuse, reduce, rethink”.
- Rethink whether plastic has to be used or not, avoid its usage where it is not needed, and ensure that the plastic is recycled.
[13:41] – How can businesses and industries be held accountable for their plastic waste and pollution?
- The government of India has put laws for assistance.
- Things like how to reduce the packaging content, designing for packaging, and not putting an extra layer of packaging, that is what is thought of if the brands are aware.
- There are alternate packaging methods like multi-led packaging is replaced by a monolayer packaging of the same material.
- The government of India has implemented new laws that require the mandatory use of recycled content in packaging by 2025. Consequently, the amount of recycled content in plastic packaging automatically increases.
- The industries are mandated to collect back the plastics that they put on the market. It’s brand-neutral and geography neutral.
- There is a global plastic treaty coming up in 2024 and 175 countries of the world have come together to sign this treaty to find solutions and find workable ways to take care of plastic waste.
