10:35- How was your journey to becoming a professional photographer?
- It was an interesting bridge. I have photographed a lot of trauma, and then I have done commercial photography.
- Eventually, I started to do what used to make me happy which was to connect with other people through the camera.
- I started going to publishers and faced a lot of rejections. Finally, one publisher took a gamble on me and the book went viral.
18:49- How would you describe photography?
- Life has become so easy because of technology. Anybody can just take out their iPhones and click pictures.
- Photography is not just about getting the result you want. It’s about anticipation, effort, and forming a connection like dating someone, metaphorically speaking.
- When I go to someone with a photo, they are not interested in the photo as much as they are interested in how I got the photo and the story behind it
26:03- How do you choose cultures and places to photograph?
- The decision is not random, but it’s mostly organic I would say. For example, I am starting a project involving the Middle East because I think it has not been artistically documented in the last 30 years.
- I have been getting invitations, I have to keep them at arm’s length to keep myself independent and objective for my own subjectivity.
- I managed to go to the Netherlands for a project because of the pandemic, and it was a weirdly wonderful experience.
