Overview

Even in the modern world, women are frequently influenced to define their identities based on marriage and motherhood. While these are personal choices, they should not be the sole means of self-definition. In today’s episode, we delve into the inspiring journey of a woman leader who initiated a women-oriented lifestyle magazine in East Africa. She continuously engages in self-reflection to comprehend and shape her own identity.

[00:43] – About Emelda Mwamanga

  • Emelda is a serial entrepreneur, talk show host, and actress from Tanzania.
  • She has garnered recognition as Africa’s Most Influential Woman in Business and Governance (2015) and has been listed among the Top 50 Women in Management in Africa (2021).
  •  Emelda is the recipient of the TIAW World of Difference Award and is the visionary founder of BANG, the first-ever lifestyle magazine in East Africa.

[05:01] – When your mother said, “You are my daughters and my sons,” is that normal or is that an exception to take that approach?

  • In the past, families often didn’t prioritize education because of the belief that their daughter would eventually marry and take the name of their spouse’s family.
  • This led to the perception that education was unnecessary.
  • Today, the attitudes have shifted, and parents recognize the capabilities of their daughters, giving equal opportunities to both boys and girls.
  • My mother envisioned the best of us. She always wanted us to run our own businesses, rather than solely focusing on marriage and becoming homemakers.

[07:10] – How did your passion for writing inspire you to start BANG?

  • During my university studies in South Africa, I noticed a stark contrast between the well-developed country and my homeland, Tanzania.
  • South Africa boasted a vibrant media industry with numerous publications and magazines, unlike in my own country.
  • As I collected various publications, I came across a magazine addressing HIV/AIDS and educating people through powerful stories.
  • This discovery inspired me to start my own magazine called BANG, which stands for “Believe And Never Give up.”
