Technology has been changing very rapidly, and we are not really able to keep up with its pace. The local governments have always been reluctant to adapt to new technology but the pandemic has forced all of us to try to make the best use of the available technology. Development in technology is also increasing the requirement for skilled people to make the best use of it. Today we have with us Mark to give us some insights.

02:20- What took you to fight for the mayor of Kansas City?

  • I started working with physically handicapped individuals for the government and pursued a master’s degree in social work. 
  • I became a social science teacher, then transitioned to the state auditor’s office.
  • Eventually, I became the city auditor of Kansas City. 
  • With a Ph.D. in urban sociology and political science, I ran for mayor and won. 
  • My wife played a significant role in managing my campaign, and her book provides insights into the process.
  • My wife has written books about our campaign, including the recent launch of the second book titled “Come on Funk, Move Your Ass.”

07:41- What initiatives did you implement in Kansas City?

  • When I was elected, we got into recession just as we had predicted. I managed the finances of Kansas City very efficiently to keep the city solvent.
  • We focused a lot on reducing violent crimes and fortunately achieved a 20-year low crime rate during my time in the office.
  • We launched an initiative named “Schools First” in which we focused on enhancing the quality of education in our schools and their role in the city’s development.

18:30- How is technology affecting the governance of big cities?

  • Local governments have always been slow at adapting new technology but the pandemic has forced everybody to make the best use of available technology.
  • Governments are now shifting towards digitization for processes like purchasing and licensing to make the process more efficient.
  • Also, the requirement for skilled people is also rising especially in the fields like accounting and finance.
