[00:41] – About Michelle K Johnston
- Michelle is an author of a book titled, “The Seismic Shift in Leadership – How to Thrive in the New Era of Connection”
- She is also an executive coach and Management professor.
[02:53] – Tell me a few pointers that you have written about seismic shifts.
- In my journey to write the book, I realised that leaders have lost trust in their people, and you can’t be a leader if your people don’t trust you. My research showed me that the reason they were not connecting with their teams is because they were not connected with themselves.
- They were putting on a mask of perfection. Perfection equals to disconnection. They were not comfortable in their skin. They were trying to be what they thought success looked like.
[10:48] – Are you also seeing more empathy in top management compared to earlier?
- One of my leaders is the head of Information Services. He hadn’t seen his team in over two years, and he said that he would love to invite his people to a cookout.
- He explained how his previous boss advised him to avoid it as it was personal, and he was supposed to keep everything professional.
[14:09] – What are some significant changes you have seen amongst the 18 people you have spoken to for your book?
- We are seeing that people are blowing up meetings. Earlier, communication used to be more transactional and one-way, and now it is more informal.
- The difference between communication and connection is that connection has an energy of reciprocation. It is a two-way process.
[20:00] – What are the areas you believe that younger leaders need to be coached in?
- They think that workers now have more power than they ever had in the history of work.
- Workers have never had this much power. They feel that they can just email that they don’t feel 100 percent to attend a session today.
- We are telling them that work-life balance and mental health are important. But now they just feel they always have the power to just say that I am not going to show up without understanding g the real consequences.
- They need coaching on accountability and how you need to show up.
