04:26- How did that migration occur from Canadian education and background to becoming a member of parliament in Portugal?

  • I immigrated to Portugal during my early teens to be closer to my extended family, completing medical school in Lisbon.
  • I became involved in public service during medical studies, joining the youth wing of the Social Democratic Party in Portugal.
  • I was elected to parliament in 2011 during a financial crisis, serving four terms with a focus on health policy and foreign affairs, alongside roles as a deputy mayor and transitioning to academic work in global health and digital.

39:40- Is there any last recommendation you want to leave to the audience?

  • Emphasize the urgent need to overhaul broken health systems in richer countries, shifting from reactive disease-focused models to proactive care strategies.
  • Highlight the transformative potential of AI in revolutionizing healthcare delivery, advocating for complete reimagining rather than retrofitting existing systems.
  • Call for global collaboration and leadership to harness AI as a force for equity, making healthcare accessible and improving outcomes for all, particularly in low and middle-income countries.
