Podcast
Overview
India is the second-largest producer of tea. It has rightly been called the elixir of life, as India is equally ahead in consumption of tea. But have we ever wondered about its ill effects because of the large amounts of sugar in it? Do we really have enough alternatives to the sweet chai?
Today, we have with us Jyoti Bhardwaj, founder of TeaFit, a made in India brand producing unsweetened but not bitter tasting tea.
[00:39] – About Jyoti Bhardwaj
- Jyoti is the Founder of TeaFit, an award-winning unsweetened beverage brand.
- Jyoti also calls herself a decent photographer and loves to read.
- Jyoti draws inspiration of unsweetened beverages from the market in Japan. Her time in Japan, from 2013 to 2015, opened her mind to the idea of launching unsweetened tea in India.
- As a first-generation entrepreneur, Jyoti feels there was a risk but vast possibilities as well in tapping into the unexplored market in India.
[04:55] – How large is the market of non-sweet beverages in India?
- It is large enough for how small I am.
- There are only two made-in-India brands: Brew House and TeaFit
- Today’s generation also wants alternatives to old brands. They want to use brands that they have discovered and that align with their value systems.
- We also tried to resort to sustainable materials from production to distribution.
- We use German filling technology, preventing the delicate flavours from escaping the beverage.
[07:13] – How are you using technology to create differentiation for TeaFit compared to others?
- TeaFit is a combination of 15 different herbs but unlike other herbed teas, we innovated to ensure it doesn’t taste bitter.
- We have a very well-researched process of extraction that has enabled us to create a blend of botanicals and taste.
- Brewing in India was almost non-existent. We did iteration from the ground, exploring how to brew large quantities of tea, the kind of tea bags to be used, etc.
[11:23] – What has gone into building TeaFit with multiple flavours?
- The mother drink of TeaFit was barley tea, as I enjoyed consuming it a lot during my days in Japan. We attempted to make it.
- We also launched real brewed green tea, black tea, and lemon tea.
- Our lemon tea is a lot less than lemon iced tea and a lot more than a classic Indian homemade lemon tea.
- We were clear to launch a tight assortment of three flavours instead of launching 10 different products
[13:16] – What goes into building a beverage brand like TeaFit?
- The best part was that I fell in love with the creation aspect of the product.
- If you truly have a differentiated product and are making a difference to the gap that exists, then it has winner written all over it.
[22:31] – What three lessons do you want our audience to take away?
- It is very important to be not afraid to ask people for help. As a founder, it is okay to not know everything.
- However, when taking help, one needs to be mindful of the team one is creating as it is the collective effort that takes you ahead.
- Be persistent to stay alive in business despite numerous block roads that you will encounter on the way.
