Overview

Sports are known to teach several valuable life lessons. Cultivating effective leadership is one such quality that the world of sports can teach. In today’s episode, we discuss the several aspects of effective leadership with Chris Gargano, a leadership expert, who borrows his foundation from the world of sports

[00:35] – About Chris Gargano

  • Chris is the founder of the Gargano leadership group.
  • He is a consultant, broadcaster, educator, storyteller, and speaker with the San Francisco Giants front office for three World Series, winning teams in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
  • Chris has led teams in the content department for the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Giants, and the New York Jets.

[02:37] – What made you select leadership?

  • While I was leading those great teams of the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Giants, and the New York Jets, I realized that I want to get better at this.
  •  I had all these responsibilities and people were relying on me. I felt that I wanted to get better and have a more well-rounded approach to leadership if I wanted to keep being a leader.
  • That education has made me dive into it, even more, to be there for other people.

[07:29]- What did sports teach you about leadership?

  • I have had the fortune of having in-depth interviews and side conversations with the highest level of athletes here in the United States, specifically baseball and football.
  • As an example, talking to a major league baseball player about hitting right. The way they talked about hitting and the way that they processed information was next level.
  • I’m giving you the correlation to the level of the way these folks process information.
  • Their ability to understand individuals, understand strategies, understand the complexities of each sport was just next level, and gleaning all that information sometimes when I’d sit down with them, I’d say this person is exactly what they’re meant to be doing and there’s value to that.
  • When you’re exactly where you’re meant to be, like you’re in an industry that really speaks to you, you’re able to lead and think clearly. That doesn’t mean you don’t have stress, but when you’ve satisfied that need to be what your true passion is, everything comes a little bit easier.
