[00:40] – About Sona Shah

  • Sona is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of My Private Professor.
  • She serves on several non-profit boards.
  • She has been recognized and felicitated several times.

[03:17] – Tell me more about My Private Professor. What are some areas you provide tuition in?

  • My Private Professor is an impact driven educational services company and our goal is to make sure that all students can get access to the resources that they need to succeed.
  • We do it through online one-on-one tutoring in virtually every subject; K-12, test prep, grad school, adult language learners etc.
  • We started off working with individuals and families and then over time we expanded to work and partner with companies that wanted to provide tutoring as a benefit to their employees and their families.
  • We have partnered with some non-profits and by working with them, we’re able to ensure that students could use this extra resource.

[07:22] – What have been some of your challenges and some of your learnings as you have scaled up?

  • One of them was just changing the format of how we tutor to embrace the shift to online learning that happened through COVID.
  • We were originally tutoring in-person, and we made a shift to online learning as COVID came.
  • What we found was that by shifting to an online model, we can have tutors in every single zip code and every single time zone.
  • We can really support students in a way that’s safe, and convenient for them.
  • Shifting from an individual-focused approach to working with companies posed a challenge. Our goal was to ensure continuous support for students while also streamlining processes for the companies we partnered with.
  • The students living in homeless shelters are already going through so many challenges, and we wanted to make sure that they were respected and heard.
  • One of the non-profits we work with had put us through trauma-informed care training. We make sure we take time to let the students select the tutors that they want.
