[00:40] – About Prof Anthony R Ingraffea

  • Prof Anthony has authored over 250 research papers with students and research associates.
  • He has been recognised, felicitated, and awarded multiple times for his contributions in various areas.

[01:04] – About his journey

  • A single impactful moment in high school, was when my physics and chemistry teacher predicted I would become an aerospace engineer.
  • This prophecy guided my first college experience and cultivated my interest in structures and their integrity.
  • My journey evolved from aerospace engineering to investigating structural failures, particularly in the context of cracking and fracture.
  • Explored the dichotomy of cracking in aerospace, where it’s undesirable, and in energy production, where it’s often necessary.
  • Pursued a PhD during the 1970s energy crisis, focusing on the fracture mechanics of rock to extract energy sources.
  • The motivation was to contribute to American energy independence by understanding how to extract resources from rock formations.

[13:31] – What are your thoughts on the role of individual consumer choices in reducing the demand for fossil fuels?

  • Individuals can drive the energy transition by using electric vehicles, opting for renewable energy sources, and enhancing home efficiency.
  • The transition from gas to electric appliances in the kitchen and heating systems to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  • These small steps collectively contribute to a broader shift toward green energy.
  • However, the impact diminishes as the scale increases, emphasising the importance of individual actions in the energy transition.

[25:39] – What message or call to action would you like to leave our audience with regarding the urgency of sustainability and climate action?

  • Do what you can do in your own home for sustainability without hesitation.
  • Do what you can do outside your own home for sustainability without hesitation.
  • Get involved and don’t hope somebody else will do what you want to do.
