Overview

In the wake of the global pandemic, Over the Top (OTT) platforms gained the limelight the most. The reasons for these transitions are innumerable. OTT platforms are more vulnerable to experimentation as it provides unique and varied content. On the contrary, content on television is mostly similar across different channels. The viewers have to restrict themselves from watching a particular genre.

In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Christian Strand talks about his journey as a TV star and the impact of OTT platforms on traditional television and the Norwegian entertainment industry.

00:58- Tell me about your own journey.

  • I started with TV when I was 12 years old.
  • I came to this huge big white house in Oslo where NRK was holding their studios.
  • Together with four other people, I got a part. I was hosting a show.
  • And after that, I did a lot of commercials and other kid shows.
  • When I was 18 I was asked to play a part in a big drama series here in Norway called the Hotel Caesar, which is a big Soap Opera Drama.
  • So my part was being piccolo at the hotel, carrying a suitcase and stuff. I was in 450 episodes.
  • And then jumped off that and became a TV host having my own TV shows, live TV shows.
  • I’ve been working with TV for 2022 years. And I’m 40 now. So it’s been all my life.

03:58- How is digital media changing the television business?

  • I think it has been a great change in the way we publish our content.
  • I think the speed has changed with digitalization becoming a huge part.
  • We publish things in shorter and faster forms.

16:13- Growing market for Norwegian films and web series.

  • I have been speaking to Netflix and HBO and they are buying more and more Norwegian or Nordic content.
  • And we see that a lot of dramas and documentaries from Scandinavia have a great audience outside the borders.
  • I think even if it’s a local Norwegian story, it can make changes or impact in India. And then the US.
  • We are watching Bollywood stories outside here in Oslo.
  • It’s becoming global. And, you know, for stars like us, suddenly the world is the market now.
