In this refreshing episode of The Brand Called You, we bring you a mentor, an author, an advertising industry veteran and much more, Mr Prabhakar Mundkur. Prabhakar has contributed most of his life working in the advertising industry, working for big names like J Walter Thompson, Havas and Hakuhodo. He has served as a mentor for many companies and NGOs. A blogger now and also a keen musician, let’s hear his story from himself. 

In the interview, Prabhakar talks about his early experience as a strategist and his yearning for strategy. He then tells us about his experience overseas. He discourses about the shift in the industry and reckons that the market has become deadline oriented. He touches upon the new age advertising on digital platforms by juxtaposing it with the conventional ways. He briefly speaks about his new found love, i.e. writing. Mundkar has written more than 400 articles in the last four years, having voted as the Top Voice of LinkedIn in 2016. Mundkar has a new show up called Turning Point.

PRABHAKAR MUNDKUR

Prabhakar Mundkur is an ad veteran and has spent over 42 years in the advertising business.  Besides working in India, he has also worked across the African Continent while he was based in Nairobi and Johannesburg and in Asia when he was based in Shanghai, China.  He has been in senior management and CEO positions for over 20 years with advertising networks like JWT, Havas, Y & R and Hakuhodo.

In 2012, he was a finalist at the Cannes Lions, and is also the recipient of the prestigious Atticus award, an award for original writing in marketing communications from the WPP Group. 

After retiring from advertising, he worked as Chief Mentor with the HGS Interactive, a Hinduja Group company where he advised the company’s teams on Social CRM, Digital marketing and Online Reputation Management. He was also on the advisory board of Sociosquares another digital marketing company. He does a fair amount of voluntary work and was a member of Whiteboard, (a part of iVolunteer), a team of experts which help NGOs on a voluntary basis.

Prabhakar writes regularly for a variety of publications that include The Mint, Agencyfaqs, The Drum (Asia), Ad Age India,  Brand Equity, Economic Times, and Business Standard.  He is a very regular blogger on LinkedIn where he has crossed over 400 blogs. He was voted no 1 Top Voice on LinkedIn for 2016; one of the most read writers during the year.

In his spare time, Prabhakar is either listening to or playing music. He was an HMV and Polydor recording artist in his teens, and continues to play jazz guitar and do the occasional gig with his friends, because he thinks it is fun. Recently he has started creating music videos with friends while at home during the pandemic and has also become proficient at music programming and film editing.

He has also co-authored a book called ‘Here Today, Here Tomorrow’ which is a collection of short stories on possible pandemic futures. Later this week, he is about to launch a show on social media called ‘Turning Point’, which is about people who shifted professions successfully when halfway through their professional journey.
