Cannabis products like marijuana and hemp have been growing freely in India for ages. It has also been actively used in the Indian medical science, Ayurveda. But due to the psychoactive properties of marijuana, there has been a constant debate on the legality of entire cannabis species products. Today, we discuss the medical benefits of cannabis and, especially, hemp.

  • Shalini is the co-founder of India Hemp & Co.
  • After working for four and a half years as a consultant with KPMG, Shalini moved to work as an editor for a magazine. She later went on to pursue MBA.

[03:33] – What is hemp?

  • It is a part of the cannabis family.
  • Marijuana is also part of the cannabis family, but is different from hemp.
  • Hemp has been a part of our culture for over 5,000 years.
  • Marijuana has a component called THC, but hemp contains less than 0.3 percent of psychoactive material.
  • Hemp has around 25,000 documented use cases.
  • In terms of preventive care, the hemp seed oil is high in protein. It also has a complete amino acid profile, helping in digestion. It also has omega 3 and omega 6, and thus, has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • CBD oil is usually ingested with hemp seed oil. CBD oil helps with chronic pain, anxiety, and heart conditions.

[11:27] – What is the reason for the sudden interest in cannabis, as it has been part of our culture for years?

  • In 1985, the UN classified Cannabis as a Class A drug. This included hemp as well. India decided not to sign that treaty. But put into an act in the country, which made a lot of confusion.
  • But later, FSSAI recognised hemp as a food source. This allows the entire industry to reach customers.

[18:31] – How are you differentiating yourself from other players in the industry?

  • We are one of the earlier movers in the market, as we entered just before the pandemic. This allowed us an option to connect with the community as people became more health conscious.
  • We take a more storytelling approach to be able to connect with the community.
  • Other differentiators are design, quality, and sustainability.
