08:11- What goes into turning around big companies like Tata Tea?
- The instant tea project was the first of its kind in the world but it wasn’t doing well.
- A non-cooperation between the three elements was the reason why the project was going slowly.
- The three elements were the English managers who supplied tea leaves, the Tamilian head clerks and the local people who felt deprived.
- I had to bring these elements all together
13:47- Tell me a little bit about how you turned Voltas around.
- I realized that the bottleneck is at the top of the bottle.
- I went to the board of directors and asked them to step off as it would have given a signal. And they did.
- I closed all the trading divisions because it was an electromechanical engineering company.
- Soon we got the contract for the Hong Kong International Airport and the Burj Khalifa.
18:14- What are some of the strongest values of the Tata group?
- They never asked me to do anything wrong.
- You can come home, look at your kids in the eyes, take them for a walk with your wife and never have any guilt.
- And you get massive respect outside.

- Second, duty toward one’s job
- Third, be the same person whether you’re talking to Mr JRD Tata, or talking to a driver, be the same person.
- Be the same person, be consistent, even with yourself.
