Podcast
Overview
There is a very right saying that you’re never too young to change the world. In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, we have a 19-year-old changemaker who takes us through her journey to break the ice of several taboos in society.
Palakh Khanna is an inspiration for young and old both, who has taken it on herself to contribute to bringing inclusivity to several communities that are otherwise shunned on several levels by our society.
[00:32] – About Palakh Khanna
- Palakh is the Founder and CEO of Break The Ice.
- Break The Ice talks about topics considered taboo by our societies.
- Palakh is also the UNSDG Regional Officer for the Asia Pacific
[02:47] – Tell me about Break The Ice, and what was the motivation to start this?
- It is trying to break the ice about taboo topics. We talk about topics related to mental health, bullying, the LGBTQ community, and gender equality.
- We do on-ground workshops and drives and online events.
- Palakh calls herself a youth change maker, social entrepreneur, mentor, and environmentalist.
[05:32] – What have been some challenges and learnings in building Break The Ice?
- The most important thing I learned in the process is how to work in a team.
- Our organisation has people in 10 different countries, and communication is key to working efficiently to reach common goals.
- Another challenge we face is reaching the right audience.
- Society’s mindset and the barriers that we create around culture, religion, gender, and age are the challenges that we are working to change.
[12:45] – Tell me about your role as UNSDG Regional Officer
- I work to try to achieve all the SDGs by coordinating with all other stakeholders in the Asia Pacific region.
- As a part of my role, I am thankful for being exposed to different opinions from across the world on how we can bring change.
- I am passionate about this role as it combines SDGs, leadership, and creating change.
[16:47] – Looking at different countries and SDGs, how are we performing in India?
- We are lacking in some SDGs majorly, while improving a lot in others.
- SDG 4 which deals with providing quality education to all should be our priority. We have people from multiple backgrounds in our country. Only quality education can shape healthy mindsets. It is not only about teaching in rural areas, it is about quality.
- SDG 1 dealing with eradicating poverty is also a concern for India as we still have a huge number of underprivileged people.
[19:11] – What are the three lessons you want our audience to take away from the perspective of Break The Ice and the SDGs?
- I am still learning myself, so would share three learnings and not call the lessons.
- Believe in your passion, do not shy to take risks, and strive to get a quality education.
