Overview

The Cynefin framework is a decision-making tool developed by Dave Snowden, which helps to classify problems into different domains based on their complexity. The five domains are simple, complicated, complex, chaotic, and disordered. The framework is designed to help leaders determine the most appropriate approach to problem-solving, depending on the type of problem they are facing.

02:26- What is Cynefin?

  • We take a Natural Science approach to social systems and use tools and methods developed from that understanding.
  • This approach can be applied to various industries such as military strategy, the development sector and pharmaceutical and oil companies.
  • Our focus is on problems where there isn’t a conventional or standard solution.

03:47- What are the elements of the Cynefin model?

  • The framework is divided into five domains: clear, complicated, complex, chaotic, and operatic.
  • The operatic domain represents a question to which the answer is not known until the problem is thought about differently.
  • The boundary between clear and complicated is a distinction between where everyone knows and agrees on what to do and where only experts need to know.

17:53- What does the name Cynefin mean?

  • “Cynefin” in Welsh means “the place of your multiple belongings”.
  • It refers to the idea that one is entangled with many pasts, physical, emotional, spiritual, and familial.
  • A Welsh name of spiritual significance was chosen to compete in the debate when someone renamed their model ‘Narc’.

23:21- What would your advice be to young people starting their journey?

  • Read a lot. Read outside your field.
  • Argue a lot. Be able to defend the position.
  • Do what you’re passionate about. It will work out.
