Overview

Sustainability is a societal goal that broadly relates to the ability of people to safely co-exist on Earth over a long time. Specific definitions of sustainability are difficult to agree on and have varied in the literature and over time. But it is clear that we need to achieve it through our combined efforts.

In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Rajeshwar Bachu talks about his experience being an activist for climate change and sustainability. He also talks about entrepreneurship and the qualities of a good entrepreneur. He also talks about the need for change regarding climate change and how to bring it about.

00:37 – About Rajeshwar Bachu

  • Rajeshwar is a vocal activist for sustainability and the effects of climate change.

01:34- Tell me about Zero Carbon and what was your motivation to start it.

  •   I came up with a start-up idea in the realm of battery innovation and battery charging technology but realised that there might not be a market for it in 10 years.
  • Climate change effects like floods, and droughts, would lead to a world without internet connections and business opportunities.
  • I thought Zero Carbon could help make the future of digitalization, more green and sustainable.
  • With digital infrastructure and digital innovation, we want to take forward the idea of creating a better future all over the world.

08:24- Why do you think sustainability is so crucial for financial markets?

  •  It is crucial in all aspects and for everyone. Soil pollution leads to issues in soil fertility and hence health issues due to malnutrition.
  • Poor air quality can lead to breathing issues including asthma and lung cancer. 70 per cent of the earth is water and water pollution can cause various health issues too.
  • We may also have to experience pandemics like Covid-19 which impacted education because people studied from home.
  • We will realise that everything will be affected only when we zoom out and look at the bigger picture.

11:47- What do the younger people need to do to be able to change the minds of baby boomers?

  • It is not about convincing or blaming anyone. Simply, the older generation had its issues and we have ours.
  • The generation before us had financial problems or societal issues and they solved them. They got through their problems and now we have to focus on our own.
  • Our generation’s biggest problem is climate change and attaining sustainability. The population has hit 8 billion and it is time we focus our efforts to solve our environmental problems.
