10:18- How do you view the role of unpredictability and chaos in organisational and strategic decision-making?
- In a complex system is you can’t predict a future state, and if you try and set explicit goals, you create perverse incentives to ignore what’s happening.
- If you have true randomness, then things follow a normal distribution, but if people talk, it becomes a Pareto distribution and you can’t predict the future anymore.
- The whole point is to understand that order, complexity, and chaos are different; they require very different leadership and management practices.
21:32- What are some of the limitations of the Cynefin framework?
- Cynefin is a decision support framework designed to determine the type of decision-based on the nature of the situation.
- Relying solely on one framework or consultancy method makes organizations non-resilient and puts them at high risk.
- The whole point of Cynefin is to acknowledge that if a situation is ordered, you can use traditional methods like BPR, but if it’s complex, a completely different approach is needed.
