Overview

AI models are mathematical algorithms that are trained on data to make predictions, recognize patterns, or generate new content. These models have taken the world by storm and have flooded the world with new and powerful tools. In this episode of The Brand Called You, Nell Watson shares interesting insights about AI safety and AI ethics.

00:33- About Nell Watson

  • Nell is the IEEE Ethics Maestro, Chair of IEEE’s ECPAIS Transparency Experts Focus Group, and Vice Chair of P7001 Transparency of Autonomous Systems Committee on A.I. Ethics & Safety.
  • She also leads organizations such as EthicsNet.org, CulturalPeace.org, Endohazard.org, and Pacha.org.

28:31- Do you think that these models are a path to AGI or will the future be some kind of a hybrid system?

  • I think that these models are a path towards AGI, intelligence that is roughly capable and comparable to human equivalency, or even beyond our intelligence.
  • The three main drivers of advancement in AI, more computing, more data, and better algorithms are showing no sign of any slowdown or any impending winter.
  • We’re clearly at the very beginning of something that’s going to be massive, transformative, very disruptive, a little bit scary, and also very exciting.

49:12- What’s your final recommendation to the audience?

  • Check out the AI Incident Database to understand ways in which AI can blindside us and cause all kinds of problems.
  • I would caution people to think about whether the use case in mind for AI is low risk, or high-risk. If it’s a high-risk use case that might impact somebody’s liberty and well-being, health, etc. I would be very careful and cautious.
  • AI is the closest thing to magic in the world today. But let’s not use this power like Muggles. Let’s be careful with it, and walk cautiously, optimistically, with hope in our hearts towards a better future.
