00:32- About David Hanson

  • David Hanson is the founder and CEO of Hanson Robotics.
  • He is also the Co-founder of SingularityNET and GAIA, the Global Artificial Intelligence Alliance.
  • He is most well known for creating the robot Sophia, the first-ever robot citizen in the world.

18:54- How do you distinguish between a Sofia or any other robot you make?

  • Designing robot faces is really fun artwork. It’s fun to work on control systems, motor control, and machine perception.
  • Many robots have been in research labs, serving cognitive psychology experiments, and mechanical engineering for grasping and manipulation control.
  • I am passionate about therapy applications – autism therapy, applied behaviour therapy, and cognitive behaviour therapy using robots for social skills training with children with an autism spectrum disorder. The results from those experiments are extremely positive, and robots have actually been deployed to help kids around the world.

22:07- How would you recommend people to enter this whole world of helping to develop and design robots?

  • Your best tool is an agile and playful mind, play, get excited, look for possibilities, they manifest.
  • Don’t know how to program, pick up a microcontroller like Arduino or ESP32, powerful machine learning, machine perception, and speech recognition tools at low cost.
  • During my PhD, I made three to four robots every year on a shoestring budget, picked up surplus parts, recycled old robots, and kept feeding them forward.
