00:45- About Faleeha Hassan

  • Faleeha Hassan is a Poet, Teacher, Editor, Writer, and Playwright.
  • She is Born in Najaf, Iraq.
  • She is the first woman to write poetry for children in Iraq.
  • She has been awarded, recognized, and felicitated several times.

06:08- The role of women in Iraqi literature

  • In my opinion, Iraqi women have played a significant role in both politics and literature throughout history.
  • It is noteworthy that the first known author and poet emerged from Mesopotamia, an ancient region in present-day Iraq. Her name was Enheduanna, a prominent figure.
  • However, the patriarchal society and its demands often limit women’s participation in literature, causing some to abandon their roles.
  • Consequently, women must persistently fight for their rightful place and opportunities, including access to education.

11:23- As an advocate for peace and understanding, how do you think poetry can contribute to these goals on a global scale?

  • Poetry holds a unique power as a universal language that transcends barriers and connects people through understanding and acceptance.
  • Whether it’s poetry with a rhythmic structure or without, what matters is that others can comprehend and appreciate the poet’s message.
  • This belief fuels my passion as I read and explore poems from various countries like India, Japan, China, Russia, and Iraq.
  • It doesn’t matter where the poems originate; what matters is the continuous effort to discover and share the beauty of poetry in different languages such as English and Arabic.
