  • Born in 1988 in Pakistan, he was raised in Sweden and studied Electrical Engineering at Imperial College London.

02:01- Inflection points that really made this wonderful career that you have

  • I had an unusual upbringing. I was born in Pakistan but only lived there for a short period of time before moving to Sweden, where my dad worked at a university.
  • Growing up, I went back and forth between Pakistan and Sweden, which made me aware of the developmental challenges facing Pakistan.
  • I also became interested in technology at an early age and saw it as an equalizer that could provide opportunities and improve people’s lives.
  • This drive to build useful solutions led me to study engineering.

07:30- How did you end up going into engineering at Imperial College?

  • As a child, I had a passion for mathematics and loved participating in math competitions and clubs.
  • I found mathematics to be a universal language and solving mathematical problems to be extremely satisfying. I wanted to study pure math but realized that it was a very introspective study, and I wanted to use it for external purposes.
  • Engineering seemed to be the best realization of math for external purposes, so I decided to pursue it.
  • I researched which branch of engineering was the most mathematical and found that electrical engineering was a good fit.
  • I applied to Imperial College in London, which had a strong math department and offered electrical and electronic engineering.
  • I was accepted and also excited about the prospect of living in London.

33:18- Evolution of Bboxx

  • In 2010 and 2008, every solar installation was done as a project.
  • We wanted to turn that project into a standardized product, so we created a series of standardized solar kits that were plug-and-play.
  • These kits were super simple for consumers to use because they only had to put a solar panel on the roof and everything else was intuitive.
  • Our initial proposition was that we would recommend the chemistry of the battery that the consumer should be using.
  • However, we realized that the upfront cost for most people was too high.
  • So, we started to think about what we could do that was different.
  • We learned from Rolls-Royce that everything is fly by the hour, so we applied the same business model to our customers.
  • We installed something in households and collected money over time.
  • This was not a new thinking because microfinance in Africa was an established thing, to begin with.
  • However, the problem with microfinance at the time was that you had to do large loans.
