00:45- About Lt Gen Anil Malik AVSM

  • A seasoned professional with over 44 years of diverse and dedicated experience in Human Resource Development / Administration / Training / Education and Healthcare Management.
  • Gen Malik is the former Director-General of Discipline, Ceremonials, and Welfare in the Army headquarters in India.
  • Gen Malik has served in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.
  • He’s a motivational speaker and in his own words, he’s on a mission on shaping the future and supporting next-generation leaders.

01:22- What did you do right in your journey, and what were your learnings and challenges?

  • I was a non-technical guy, so for me, it was a challenge to learn about that.
  • But then the system that was adopted in the regime was very simple you were appointed a troop leader, but you had to go through first becoming a driver thereafter graduating to become the gunner and graduating to become the operator, and it’s only then you were actually physically given command of a troop.
  • The purpose was not that I should become a better driver, but it was to make me understand what the job involved.
  • This learning process is what made me draw a balance in life.

06:33- What in your opinion has been your leadership style?

  • I Foremost decided that all things which did not appeal to me when I was growing up are something that I will not force upon people.
  • My focus would be not on trying to command people, but always focus on giving them that environment.
  • Environment to grow involves giving them responsibilities, don’t try to run the show for them.
  • For me, operational preparedness which is the buzzword we hear so often in the media, particularly whenever there is a change of command when there’s a change of environment, or the hierarchy changes, the first thing the media would like to know is what are you going to do about operation preparedness.
  • In my understanding, the human being is the most important player who is going to make a difference. It is his psyche and his mindset which is going to make a difference.
