Workplace Well-being relates to all aspects of working life, from the quality and safety of the physical environment, to how workers feel about their work, their working environment, the climate at work, and the work organisation.

In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Sir Cary Cooper talks about well-being and mental well-being. He also touches upon his experience working with the UK government. He explains the different aspects of workplace well-being and gives pointers as to how to manage them.

[00:37] – About Sir Cary Cooper

  • He is the founding president of The British Academy of Management.
  • He is the president of The Institute of Welfare.
  • He is an advisor to the WHO ILO and the EU in the field of occupational health and well-being.

05:23- What is well-being at the workplace?

  • Well-being is made up of a number of constituent parts.
  •  Number one, if people want to, they can work flexibly given the fact we have the technology we have.
  •  And since the pandemic, we realized people who unfortunately had to work 100% remotely, during much of the last two years, but now don’t, but can work flexibly.
  • Number two is long working hours.
  • The more we’re allowed to work flexibly, the better it may be for those people who can’t, this may be a part of the well-being thing for those people who have to be at the coalface. Maybe we have a four-day working week.
  • There’s quite strong evidence from Sweden, Iceland, and New Zealand that shows that a four-day working week is as effective as a five-day working week.

15:46- Do men and women handle well-being differently?

  • The answer to that is yes. They handle it differently.
  • Women tend to have more EQ than men. They’re more sensitive to their feelings, and they’re able to express their emotions a lot more than men.
  • And so they are able to recognize when things aren’t going well. And they tend to be able to talk about this with close personal friends and other females and get it out.
  • And by doing that, they can explore how they should deal with their problems.
  • Men tend to bury their emotions. And by doing that, and because they don’t talk as much about their feelings, they don’t share their feelings.
  • And they feel they should be able to cope by themselves, which becomes a big issue.

23:42- What would you say are three lessons you would want our listeners to take away?

  • If you ever get into a managerial role, look after the people, look after your employees like you look after your children. Think about how you’d like your children to be treated in the workplace. Treat them, they’re like they’re your own family. That’s one thing.
  • The second thing is in life generally. Just be kind. I mean, it’s easy to get angry at somebody who makes a mistake.
  • Be open. Just be yourself. Don’t try to be somebody you’re not.
  • But to me, the most important thing is this kindness. I don’t think we see enough of it.
