  • He is a diplomat, mountain mountaineer, storyteller, and lifelong entrepreneur, and has dodged avalanches, and bullets on three continents.

02:30- How did you manage to achieve the first and only ascent of Denali’s north wall when you were just 20 years old?

  • The climb up Denali’s north wall in 1963 was extremely difficult and dangerous, with risks including avalanches and falls. Despite these dangers, we were persistent and resilient, ultimately achieving what no one else has repeated in 60 years.
  • My young life was entirely based on adventure, continually seeking out and conquering new challenges, from climbing difficult mountains to hitchhiking around the world, which fueled my determination and courage to tackle Denali.
  • By the time of the Denali climb, I had faced violent death multiple times and emerged unscathed, which reinforced my sense of invulnerability and willingness to take on high-risk endeavors, ultimately contributing to my success on Denali’s north wall.

29:13- What would be your advice to young people starting their journey?

  • Be prepared to take risks and be prepared to fail a lot.
  • Read my memoir “Quest- Risk, Adventure, and the Search for Meaning” by John Graham for a fuller understanding of my journey and experiences.
  • Understand that overcoming fears and obstacles, much like many young people experience today, is part of the journey to success.
