“Saudi Medicare is a holding company started back in the 80s by a large Saudi Conglomerate. The business back in the 80s 90s to early 2000s was managing hospitals in the Middle East Basically Government hospitals that outsource the management and the setup along the lines the company grew and acquired a UK hospital management company called United Medical Enterprises. So it went from a regional player to a global player covering almost 22 countries over the last, let’s say 15 years.”
Ali shares his many experiences, learnings and challenges he faced while managing hospitals across different countries. During the pandemic, the challenges were big and overwhelming. He throws light on the challenges faced by frontline healthcare workers and how they risked their own lives to save others.
Ashutosh and Ali further discuss the conflicts between healthcare owners and doctors. A problem that is largely prevalent in India. Ali shares that his work ethic always prioritizes the patients. He shares a very interesting story to highlight that his organisation and team are doing only what is best for the patients.
His work has helped hundreds of people in the trying time of the pandemic. He is driven by social welfare and compassion. And he is the biggest motivator for his colleagues and teams.

Ali Tabbara is the Managing Director of Saudi Medicare Company Limited (SMC), a leading owner and operator of a variety of healthcare providers in the GCC. SMC has been operating since 1985 and has an extensive track record in the sector. From hospital development/Project management and operations, as well as, standalone state-of-the-art radiology centers, SMC and its sister company UME Group (UK) are at the forefront of the healthcare service sector. In addition to his role as MD, Ali is the CEO of Allied Diagnostic Center (ADC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, CEO of Allied Medical Center, Dubai, UAE, Chairman of Muscat Private Hospital, Muscat Oman and Chairman of UME Group Limited, London, UK.
Prior to his role at SMC, Ali was the Managing Director in UTC International, a leading audit and consulting firm. His areas of expertise include management consultancy, strategic planning, private placements and financial advisory. Ali established the Consulting practice of the firm in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon and has carried out various assignments throughout the GCC and MENA regions. Prior to that he was the Managing Director of Agricola Villa Alegre, major fresh fruit producer in Chile. He was a Board Member of British Mediterranean Airways ( Franchisee of British Airways) and a member of the executive committee. Ali holds an MBA from Pepperdine University, California and a B.S. in Accounting from Ithaca College, New York. He is also a CPA, licensed in the State of California and a member of the Young Presidents Organization and the Chairman of YPO MENA Region 2013-2015 and the Chairman of YPO GOLD MENA Region 2018-2020.
