In the current pace of life, we cannot deny not having stress. It was always a part of mankind’s life, but with the complexities of globalization, it has only increased in personal and professional space.
However, it is important to understand the negative impacts of stress. It is essential to carve out a way to understand and manage it efficiently. Only then can we lead a purposeful life. Today, we have with us Prof Pete Alexander, who works on techniques to manage stress from his personal experiences.
[00:42] – About Prof Pete Alexander
- Prof Alexander is the president of Office Plants by Everything Grows.
- He is the author of the book titled, “Lighten Your Day: Fast, Easy & Effective Stress Relief”.
- He was diagnosed with stress-induced diabetes, which led him to the journey of managing stress.
[03:13] – Tell me about your journey as you decided to change your lifestyle.
- I ignored to deal with stress-induced diabetes and ended up in the emergency room with an extended stay in an ICU with a severe case of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Basically, my body was eating itself up alive because of my stress.
- Lying on the hospital bed was not a turning point. I was still stressing about the work. The medical team was unable to read my blood sugar level as it was very high. A stranger nurse told, “That is what puts you in the hospital bed in the first place.” That was my epiphany moment.
[06:34] – Tell me about your book, “Lighten Your Day: Fast, Easy & Effective Stress Relief”.
- I realized that the books on stress were mostly talking about one or two techniques. The problem is that we do not have a lot of time to figure out how to deal with stress in the now.
- The intent of the book is to keep it handy whenever and wherever you need it.
- It has some 100 techniques, and most of them you can implement in five minutes or less.
- The number of techniques is due to the fact that what works for one may not work for the other.
[12:16] – What causes stress, and what are some symptoms to watch out for?
- What causes stress is anything that poses a real or perceived challenge or threat to a person’s well-being. This can come from work, relationships, financial pressures, and other situations.
- The key is that not all stress is bad.
- There is good stress called: eustress. If we are working on something we love, that helps us in getting it done on time.
- We want to eliminate or reduce negative stress, also referred to as distress.
- Distress comes in two flavors: one is ruminating about something in the past, and the second is anxiety that may or may not happen in the future.
[20:32] – Tell me about the venture, Office Plants by Everything Grows.
- We help companies improve productivity and reduce stress through the methodical placement of lush living plants in work environments.
- Indoor plants enhance the overall aesthetic of the place. But beyond that, clinical studies that live plants boost moods, increase creativity, reduce stress, and remove air pollutants. It helps in creating a healthier and happier environment.
