Overview
Entrepreneurship is the creation or extraction of economic value. With this definition, entrepreneurship is viewed as change, generally entailing risk beyond what is normally encountered in starting a business, which may include values other than economic ones.
In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Carol Hansen talks about YPO. She also talks about entrepreneurship and her experience as the co-chair of the YPO Global Impact Summit. Carol talks about her company and the changes it went through over the years.
[00:22] – About Carol Hansen
- She is the founder and CEO of Tatonka Capital Corporation.
- She was the host chair for the Denver Global Leadership Conference in 2011.
- She is also the co-chair of the YPO Global Impact Summit.
04:03- Talk about your, personal entrepreneurship journey and YPO.
- My company Tatonka Capital Corporation was started in 1993. And like many leaders, I was experiencing the loneliness that’s at the top.
- At the time that I joined YPO, 20 plus years ago, it had a threshold of being a CEO under the age of 40 and also reaching a US revenue of $8 million.
- YPO has a minimum experience level of what they’ve been managing or leading. It gives a camaraderie that is gender, and culturally neutral because of the economic and the age requirement.
- My business is very US-centric, I’m focused on public finance and public education in the US. YPO has taken me out into the rest of the world, to have these types of conversations.
06:08- What were the catalysts to your entrepreneurial journey?
- I have a history in my family of strong entrepreneurial women, certainly in a different shape and form. My grandmother and my mother had beauty salons.
- I have a very supportive spouse, who is very linear in his aerospace engineering. I tend to be the ‘what if, how about this, let’s move there’. So it’s a very nice combination.
- I was a successful underwriter of public finance transactions for a national bank, that wanted to put a cap on my earnings because I had done too well. And that pushed me out into the marketplace.
- One of my skills is to identify inefficient niches in gigantic markets. There was no competition because they wouldn’t do what I could do, and vice versa. And we just grew.
13:08- What was it like to go through the transition from your original niche?
- It’s not fun, because when you’ve got a thriving market niche going on change is always hard. But yes, it tends to follow trends. In the past 30 years, we’ve probably pivoted five times.
- Because of the margins closing, we moved into this back office services space in education, primarily because we’re very good at managing governmental money.
- We understand the procurement process of government entities and how to have that money flow through for the needed services. And so that started in the summer of 2015.
- Our federal government, constantly tells people, academic administrators, academic instructors, teachers, and even students that they are not good enough. And that’s something that we’re hoping to change.
