[01:15] About The Kaleel Jamison Consulting Group
The firm was started by a woman named Kaleel Jamison. In 1970, she started doing workshops on racism and sexism in her church group. She died of breast cancer in 1985.
[02:16] Shift from Academia to Consulting
I was a faculty member, and I found that higher education was too hard to change. I needed to find a space where I could accelerate the change.
[03:13] Key challenges of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment
The biases that we have and the ways in which these are deeply rooted in our cultures and our societies are very hard to change. Therefore, our policies and practices within organizations also reflect those biases. Women left the workplace during COVID-19 to take care of their children and family. So we keep on finding the burden of the family being put on women.
[05:11] Correcting Imbalances
All the organizations have to decide that it is important. The imbalance is in the boardrooms of the U.S. We need to make it a priority.
[07:48] The concept of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in schools
Our children should understand that we should treat each other equally. These values are very influential for kids to learn from an early age. There was a study that showed when a child wanted something stapled if it was a girl they would staple it for them, if it was a boy they would say to the boy here’s how you do it.
[14:22] Differential being created because of societal religious educational beliefs
I am Jewish, and I grew up with lots of self-limiting religious beliefs. We had a fight within our religion, these fights have been in many spheres.
[16:23] How are Gen Zs and Millennials changing diversity, equity, and inclusion?
Many of them have grown up in a much more diverse society. They have friends who are of different backgrounds and identities. They are not limiting themselves. Furthermore, they are coming into organizations and trying to bring a change.
[18:19] About No Fairy Godmothers, No Magic Wands: The Healing Process After Rape (1984)
In 1976, when I moved to Oklahoma, somebody broke into my house, and I was raped. I felt a very strong responsibility to speak up about it.
