Overview

We know you love watching videos on your phone. But modern activities— such as plugging in devices, driving cars, and cooling homes—often rely on energy sources such as natural gas, oil, and coal. Those energy sources release a gas called carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. When CO2 and other greenhouse gases trap heat that would otherwise escape Earth’s atmosphere, the planet’s temperature rises. We have Manik Suri to talk to us about carbon emissions and climate change.

00:35- About Manik Suri

  • Manik is the Founder and CEO of Therma, a technology startup whose mission is to help protect our food, health, and planet.
  • Previously, Manik co-founded the Governance Lab (GovLab), an innovation center at NYU that develops technology solutions to improve government.
  • He has been recognized amongst the Top 100 Harvard Alumni in Technology, a past Affiliate of Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society, and previously held positions at global investment firm D. E. Shaw & Company and the White House National Economic Council.

01:02- About Therma

  • Therma is a startup that I Co-Founded focused on transforming the cooling sector, trying to reduce waste and reduce the carbon footprint of air conditioning and refrigeration.
  • We focus on the cold chain, the refrigeration layer, but the reality is that cooling causes a lot of emissions.

06:30- What goes into supporting all these activities?

  • From a technology standpoint, we use a combination of IoT sensors.
  • These are the size of a deck of cards.
  • We develop and sell IoT-enabled solutions.
  • Customers will drop these into a piece of refrigeration or a freezer, or if you have a large cold storage warehouse, you might put dozens of them.
  • Those give you 24/7 visibility into what’s going on inside the environment.

09:37- How receptive are the large corporations to actually making a change?

  • They’re very receptive. It’s largely because we sell on a primarily financial ROI.
  • We don’t believe that businesses will necessarily adopt technology just because it’s the right thing to do for the planet.
  • You have to convince business stakeholders that what they’re doing is also good for them, and so our vision and our mission are to align profitability and sustainability.

22:47- Three lessons

  • Believe in yourself.
  • Surround yourself with people who inspire you and who are better than you.
  • Don’t take it too seriously.
