Overview

It is often perceived that a competitive salary would be sufficient to keep employees motivated and committed. But lack of culture and making people curious, make them leave organizations in search to feel a sense of accomplishment. Only when employees are curious about things and take it as a mission to own the project and accomplish it, do they feel fulfilled. In today’s episode, we discuss the process of making employees take ownership at work.

[00:34] – About Andy Bass

  • Andy is the managing director of BassClusker Consulting.
  • He is the author of two books: “Committed Action” and “Start With What Works”.
  • Andy is also a leadership advisor and speaker.

[02:07] – Tell me about your book, “Committed Action”. What was your hypothesis?

  • The basic idea is that you cannot motivate people. Leaders want commitment and creativity from their people.
  • The idea was to look for ways that would make people stay and offer a commitment to their leaders.

[04:03] – When you talk about a “three-step way to inspire people and take ownership”, how do you define ownership?

  • You can assign responsibility and not ownership. It has to be taken on.
  • When you have people who feel that they own the project or an aspect of the business, they will be proactive, they will try to improvise.
  • One way to approach this is how educators approach it. We have to find ways to get people curious.
  • This is followed by encouraging exploration, and then you can transfer ownership.

[08:09] – What prevents people from taking ownership?

  • The biggest is fear of blame.
  • Another reason is that we distort culture by tolerating bad behavior from people whose numbers are good. We are too hard on genuine mistakes and too tolerant of violations of culture. What we need is to flip it.
